Crillon Le Brave

Imagine a place where time stands still. A warm breeze ruffling through the vineyards, the rolling Mediterranean vistas sprawled out below as the subtle scent of fresh lavender floats up to meet you as you soak up the sun on your hidden terrace.

This isn’t a scene from my dreams. This is real.

This is Crillon Le Brave.

Escape to this charming 17th century hilltop village in North East Avignon, an intimate 5 star retreat. The 34 room, luxury boutique hotel of Crillon Le Brave comprises of seven restored stone houses all interwoven by meandering staircases, stone pathways, and hidden terraces. This rambling residence at the foot of Mont Ventoux is the perfect place to indulge in the romance and simple pleasures of Provence.

We hired a car from Nîmes airport and embarked on the scenic drive through the endless vineyards and olive groves. As we pulled into the small drive, we knew we were in for a treat. After registering we were led through the reception building out onto the courtyard with spectacular views over the glistening scenery below.

Wandering through the herby gardens, we paused under the shade of a tree to try our hand at boules, explored the quiet nooks and visited the alluring azure pool.

Lunch soon crept up on us. We ascended the stone steps to find a table at the La Grange restaurant. As the midday sun poured over the main terrace we settled under an umbrella overlooking the incredible countryside.

The locally sourced à la carte lunch menu was bursting with Provençal specialties such as roasted duck, braised pork and breaded goats cheese salad.

By far the show stopper of the meal was the Beef Tartar. A table was set up and the freshest ingredients brought out. In a large bowl before us, an egg yolk, mustard to taste, and oil were combined, seasoned and whisked. Tabasco sauce, Worcester sauce, pickles, onions, herbs and finally the most tender, finely sliced beef were added, mixed and served. A masterpiece in your mouth, paired superbly with wine recommended by the resident Sommelier.

Even if you are just passing through, Crillon Le Brave is well worth the visit and is the perfect spot to lap up the rustic charm of Provence.
