Liebster Award Nomination

Liebster Award

I’m very honoured to be awarded with a Liebster Award from Ciara over at Ciara Cohen Ennis. Make sure to check out her marvellous blog and follow her adventures! Thank you so much, Ciara, for the nomination!

‘Liebster’ is derived from the German word for ‘dearest’ and the award was created as an international way of recognising and promoting blogs.

Here are the questions I have been asked to answer:

  1. Where are you from?

I was born in Hong Kong, raised in Hertfordshire, England (just north of London) and have lived in Leeds, since 2004.

  1. If you had to live in another country, which would it be and why?

It would have to be warm, pretty, and diverse so probably Croatia (although if I FORCED to live in the Maldives then I wouldn’t be complaining…)

  1. What is the luckiest thing that has happened to you while travelling?

I think I’m lucky every time I make new friends, find a great restaurant, have an experience, or even just having the opportunity to travel. But if I had to pick something, I would say the time when we went to Norway to see the Northern Lights. We just happened to catch the lights on a night when they were at their most powerful in 10 years.  It was the most spectacular and amazing experience of my life.

  1. What festival would you like to visit the most?

I don’t drink beer and I already spend quite a lot of time in Germany, so I have no sensible explanation as to why Oktoberfest is right at the top of my bucket list!

  1. What has been your scariest travel experience?

My partner, Tim and I thought it would be a good idea to get off a plane in Cancun at 11o’clock at night, get in a rental car and drive through the night to Chichen Itza, the amazing ancient Mayan city. The area is so desolate that the one motorway has, on average, one exit every 50 to 100 miles. The drive was fine until we got to a police checkpoint where the policeman manning the checkpoint held us at gunpoint. He and his huge dog searched our car because he suspected we were drug smugglers! He then warned us to be careful as there were kidnappers and drug smugglers in the area and there weren’t any more police checkpoints until after our destination which was still over 100 miles away. It was an awkward drive.

  1. What travel destination most exceeded your expectations?

I think we forget that whilst we dream of travelling to exotic destinations around the world, you often over look the amazing places just around the corner. Recently we went stargazing in the Pennine Mountains and slept the night in our car. We then woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the mountains and had an invigorating morning exploring the hills and rivers that, despite being on our doorstep, we otherwise probably would never have gone to see.

  1. What’s the strangest food you’ve ever eaten abroad?

My bucket list is only slightly longer than my list of allergies so I normally leave the unusual cuisine to my travel partner, Tim, who refuses to eat anything that he could buy back in England. This forces him to make some questionable decisions. I think his strangest moment was when he visited a cheese factory in Holland and ate a 3 course meal at the factory restaurant where everything was made from cheese or cheese bi-products including an unusual fizzy drink. However when I was in Australia I did try crocodile, wallaby, kangaroo and emu which is strange to me.

  1. Where did you make the best friends on your travels?

I think the drawback to my travel style (always wanting to explore new places and see new things) is that I’ll rarely go back to the same place and reconnect with friends that I’ve made there. But I’m lucky that I’ll often travel with my partner and best friend so we can share the experience and make new friends together.

  1. If you could only travel in one continent, which would it be and why?

I would have to go for Europe. It’s so diverse and has so much to see, there are the northern lights at the top, the sun in the South, so much history in the west and so many mysterious places in the East. I also have friends spread throughout Europe and I could never agree to not seeing them again!

  1. Do you prefer travelling in large cities or smaller towns and in the countryside?

Whilst I always like to see the tourist highlights, which tend to be in the cities, we usually get ourselves a car that gives us freedom to get out of the city and explore some of the weirder and quirkier sides to a destination. It’s a great way to get off the tourist path, see the other side of a country and have an adventure.

  1. Where did you feel the most at home while abroad?

I’m a bit of a bed fanatic so I can definitely tell you where I don’t feel at home and that’s whenever I end my day travelling and slip into a hotel or hostel bed and miss my beautiful bed at home.

So that’s enough about me.  I’d like to nominate the following kick-ass bloggers for a Liebster Award…
